Nihon Nohyaku’s Crop Aid Product Initiatives

Nichino Group is expanding its business scope to not only Crop Protection Products but also the development of Crop Aid Products (Biostimulants  and other products) as part of its efforts in new fields.

“Frostbuster” is a product that contributes to the realization of a sustainable circular society. It was developed based on a new idea to protect from frost damage in crops through the effective utilization and supercooling-promoting activity*1 of coffee grounds that are produced as a byproduct in the manufacture of canned coffee. This agricultural material was developed by KUREi, a startup launched by the Kansai University, in collaboration with Asahi Quality & Innovations, Ltd. and Nihon Nohyaku. KUREi discovered the supercooling-promoting activity of coffee ground extract and found that it could be applied to protect frost damage in crops. Nihon Nohyaku distributes it under the brand name of “Frost Buster” to farms having trouble with frost damage.
*1. Frost and ice form by a process in which tiny particles called “ice nuclei” act as the seed for the ice formation, and little by little turn into large ice crystals. Supercooling-promoting activity prevents ice nuclei from forming into ice crystals, and water from freezing at temperatures below zero.

“Cross Value ®” is a biostimulant product containing Bacillus licheniformis DSM5749 and Bacillus subtilis DSM5750, contributes to crop production by enhancing its tolerance against abiotic stress with the effect of the microorganisms. Based on the field trial results in Japan which we observed yield increase of strawberries and cucumbers and enhancement of root development of asparagus mother trees, we are confident that Cross Value® meets the expectation of growers for yield increase and quality improvement.
